Rambis Lacerates Leg in Practice
By TIM BROWN, LA Times Staff Writer

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Laker assistant Kurt Rambis was taken from the floor of Continental Airlines Arena on a stretcher after suffering a deep cut on his lower leg before Wednesday night's game against the New Jersey Nets.

He was treated at Meadowlands Hospital and released in time to join the team as it flew to Boston, where it plays Friday.
Rambis, as is his near daily ritual, was playing a game of one-on-one against Mark Madsen when he crashed into a row of chairs on the baseline. His leg apparently was cut by a sharp or pointed edge on one of the chairs and it began to bleed profusely. Medical personnel quickly applied pressure bandages and raised the leg to stem the bleeding. Several minutes later, Rambis, his right sock and shoe soaked in blood, was lifted to a stretcher and taken to the hospital, where he received sutures on the muscle and six stitches on the exterior leg.

By the time he was carried away, Rambis had regained his famous sense of humor. Appearing pale, strapped to the stretcher and with his leg raised, Rambis was being rolled from the floor when fellow assistant Frank Hamblen peered down and said, "Hey, you going to the hospital?"

"Well," Rambis said with a laugh, "I hope so."

After watching the second half of the game from the locker room, Rambis boarded the bus without help, though with a pronounced limp.

Today is Kurt's 44th Birthday. Happy Birthday Kurt from every fan here at Laker Jim's Kurt Rambis Homepage. I was able to meet Kurt over the weekend. He spoke with me for about 5 minutes in the cold New York weather with just his practice gear on. And even though I knew he was freezing, it really meant a lot to me that he took some time to chat with me.

I have updated the Food Section of the site with new recipes and Kurt's Zone diet. The new recipes are courtesy of the new cookbook "The Lakers Are Cookin', Again" that is available through the Lakers website.

Kurt will be Phil's shadow for the next three years, Priming him to take over the team when Phil hangs it up.

Hey everyone! Just thought I'd check in. Kurt news has been kinda slow. As you all know Kurt is currently on a Championship tour with the greatest show on Earth. From what I see, I believe he has taken over the duties of Bill Bertka (jotting down notes on almost every play to analyze later). Phil Jackson has been talking recently about calling it quits after his contract expires in 2004. Hopefully by then, Kurt will be primed to take over the head coaching duties again. However, it might be without Shaq who claims he'll never play for another coach. Either way, by then Kobe will be something we can't even fathom.

My Mark Madsen site is in full swing. Check it out:

A cool announcement today. CROD Productions has just purchased the domain name... www.KURTRAMBIS.com ! I am currently working on it and will let you know when it is up an running. I am looking into some redirection sites so that kurtrambis.com will bring you right here. This domain will remain as well. But I just figured that it would be cool to own an official domain name.

Hey Rambis fans, got two cool things for you to check out. The picture to the left is an autograph that I received from Kurt the other day. I must have mailed it months ago when I wasn't sure of the right address. I was sending stuff everywhere. With the signed picture, Kurt also wrote me a little note saying that he just got the picture and that I had sent it to the Staples Center. He told me the right addy to send to and also returned the money I sent him for postage.

The Second cool thing is something we've been waiting for , for a looooooong time. Thanks to the nice people at the Santa Clara University Media Relations Department and our good buddy Tony Arellano, I have finally opened a section devoted to Kurt's COLLEGE YEARS at SCU. Make sure you check it out. These pictures are on the net for the FIRST TIME ANYWHERE! Leave it to this page to bring you time after time of Rambis firsts.

Well it finally happened (2001 Space Odyssey begins to play) but On Tuesday Morning, July 3rd, at 12:17 in the afternoon....I received an email from the MAN himself.  In it Kurt wrote:

"James, Sorry it's taken so long to respond. I visited your (my) site and was absolutely amazed. I don't even want to think about how many hours it must have taken you to build it. But it's GREAT!!!!  I don't know if you have heard but Phil asked me to join him on the bench next season. I'm real excited about getting back into coaching. Bertka and Tex have been asked to perform other tasks for Phil. Hope all is going well with you. Again I really enjoyed visiting your home page especially the parts about high school. It brought back alot of fond memories. Kurt"

My dream has come true and all the hard work I've put into this site has finally paid off. I just want to thank Kurt for taking the time to write me about the site. I hope we can set up more with him in the future.

"I felt it was time to bring Kurt in and give him the opportunity to be part of this staff," Jackson said. "It's the right time with the young players that we have and with the energy that we kind of need. I realize you need to be able to understand hip hop and at least some rap terms if you're going to exist and survive in this business."

June 27, 2001

Great news today. It appears that Kurt will be back on the bench next season as one of Phil Jackson's assistant coaches. Long time Laker Bill Bertka will move into a consulting position with LA. With Tex Winter contemplating retirement, Rambis looks like he'll take over the Lakers in three seasons when Phil's contract runs out. The LA Times reports that since Rambis has always been a favorite of Mitch Kupchak and Jerry Buss. LA Times writer Tim Brown thinks "Rambis' move--from front office to the bench--would appear to affirm him as Jackson's heir apparent. "

On Friday( the day we won the title), We went early to Philly.. Before we did, I called the hotel and asked to beconnected to his room...I was nervous but I got his machine. I left a message saying who I was and that I had a booklet about the webpage to givehim. I knew the Lakers would probably not sign but I was mainly there for Kurt. We arrived at about 3. We waited in the heat...Lakers came out and this was the biggest crowd I've ever seen at a hotel for a team. There had to be 200 people there and they barricaded us off very far. It would be impossible for the players to stop and pick out Laker fans in the massive booing crowd. But that's Ok, I understand. Around 7:00 this woman said the Mitch Kupchek had just left in a cab. I was hoping Kurt wasn't with him. we waited a little longer and no Kurt. The big Lincoln that he got in the other day was not there either so I was nervous. About 7:15 he popped out. We were the only ones left.

He smiled walking up to us and said "You got the stuff for me?" I was thrilled he remembered. I gave him the booklet and he laughed as soon as he saw the screen shot of the Front Page. He pointed to the pic of him in the tux and said "What is that?" I said jokingly "I'm not sure who that is." He responded "I know WHO it is...I wanna know where you got it." we laughed. HE skimmed through it and I told him its got so much stuff about him on it. I told him "Even your biology partner from H.S. sent me some great pic of you." He belted out a great laugh. I asked him if he'd sign some stuff for me and he said 'sure.' I had a Lakers jersey that I had made that I'm trying to get the 1987 team to sign. So far all I had was Magic. I needed the sig on the mesh so that's tough to sign. He took his time and said "I never could write ont hese things." But he signed a great big auto right under Magic. Right on cue, my girlfriend asked him if he'd sign a purple Rambis jersey I had. He happily signed it. he then took a picture with the two of us and said "Why do I get the feeling this is gonna show up on the webpage?" We laughed again. He shook our hands and said he'd check it out. He walked off and got onto a bus that pulled up for the media

I updated the Rambis Highschool section with some new pictures I made. I'd like to thank to Tony Arellano, Cupertino High School class of 76, who contributed the yearbooks scans. Check it out.

Well I wasn't sure this would ever happen again, but I ran into Kurt yesterday for the first time in a long time. We went down to Philly to see the Laker at their hotel. I was in my Laker gear so the Philly fans wanted us hung. We were about to leave and I wanted to stick around for Jerry Buss to come out. Good thing we did cause soon after Kurt appeared. I was shocked. I didn't even know he was in "Filth-adelphia." He signed my 2000 Championship jersey and I told him about the site. I gave him the address and he said he would check it out. He was so nice. I'm gonna try to go back on Wednesday. If I do I'll be prepared and will give you all a full report.

Another great honor for Laker Jim's Kurt Rambis Homepage. The site was profiled as SITE OF THE WEEK in SCD (Sports Collectors Digest) in the May 18th issue. I'd like to thank Tom Kessenich for a great write up. SCD is the top publication when it comes to collectors of memorabilia. See the article above.

On the Kurt front, things have been quiet. He recently appeared for one of the sponsors at the Anaheim Medical Trade show with my buddy John Salley and James Worthy.
