This was Kurt's sophomore year, so it's more understated than the following year, which is when they won the CCS (Central Coast Section Championships) for the first time ever. It was a riveting game played at Stanford's Maples Pavilion. Cupertino was down by one point, Ken Sayre fouled out with a few min left, Mile Saladino was fouled in the backcourt with just over a min left and he missed the first of a one and one situation. He missed; Kurt tipped it in and St Ignatius ran the clock from 1:04 to :04 and took the last shot and missed. A perennial champ at CCS. The band used to strike up and play "Jesus Christ Superstar" whenever Kurt took the floor. This started in his junior year. As to why he was cut (by the Knicks)right out of college, all I can say is that a LOT of people think he screwed up in going to SCU instead of a big school. He could have developed a lot more in a bigger program and was good enough to have been assured playing time. Most people thought the NBA scouts had an imaginary asterisk next to his name on the recruit rolls ... as in, "COULD be good, but ... untested." That sort of deal. (Obviously, they were way off :) (Note: the reason he chose SCU was to avoid having to leave his girlfriend at the time. Always a BAAAAAD reason.) If

"Again I really
enjoyed visiting your page especially the parts about
high school. It brought back alot of fond memories." - Kurt Rambis
I was able to make these images thanks to Tony Arellano, Cupertino High School class of 76, who contributed the yearbooks scans. Tony went to school with Kurt and was lucky enough to be his biology partner too! |
